| Your
Child's Learning Style
As a parent how can you tell if a school "fits"
well with your child? Before we can go any further we need to address
a critical topic "learning style." Each of us has a learning
style, a certain way in which we learn best. Do you know your child's
learning style? Do you know how your child interacts with the world
around him? Do you know how he/she absorbs information?
Take a trip to a nearby park and you'll see how different
each child is. Like a snowflake, no child is alike. If you look
over to the sandbox, you'll see creativity at work, as young children
pretend to either bake the best sand pies with charm and finesse
while some of them bulldoze a pile of sand in the midst of it all,
digging and hauling sand all around. Take a look at the jungle gym
or the monkey bars. You'll see daredevils spinning, climbing and
twirling around, children that are full of energy and full of life.
Look over to the swings and you'll see a child swinging gracefully,
gliding smoothly in the air while the other child swings up high
with rough and forceful motions.
I'm sure by now, you have realized the point I'm trying
to come across, that each child is different. Each child has his
own style of playing, relaxing, socializing and each child has his
own style of learning. Understanding your child's learning style
can help you find ways to not only nurture her but to help you support
your child to succeed in life. As you find your child's strengths,
you will also find ways to tackle and overcome her weaknesses, helping
her excel in areas where she would normally struggle. Knowing your
child's learning styles can be effective in working with her teacher
as a team.
Child psychologists can tell you that there are varieties
of learning styles out there, categorized in multitudes of ways.
But to simplify the concepts, many educators and psychologists have
drawn out seven different learning styles. Your child may have one
or two or even more of these learning styles and they can help you
determine what subjects work well with what type of learning styles
she possesses and what subjects in school might eventually create
red-flag alerts if your child's learning style is never determined,
leaving you, the teacher and your child frustrated—making
it even harder down the road to maximize her potential.
